January 25, 2012. Member Hans Hoeflein was this mornings speaker and his topic was the life of Dr. Lee Serfas.
Dr. Lee Serfas joined the Palmer Kiwanis Club in April 1980. Lee is probably on the a few doctors that did not graduate from high school, did not graduate from college and did not graduate from medical school. In his last year of high school he began a program to become a medical doctor in the Army program where they need doctors in World War II. He went to Mulenberg College in their pre-medical program and before graduation he went to Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia where he finished in 1948 and then to St. Luke's Hospital for his residency training. Lee was married in 1948 he was married and in 1949 he went into the Army and was assigned to Japan. In June 1950, the Korean war broke out and he was sent to South Korea as a surgeon. He had no surgical experience but quickly learned "under fire". He spend two years in the war zone before he was assigned back to Japan. From there he moved to several other assignments. He spent 20 years in the Army and retired as a full Colonel in 1968 at Valley Forge Hospital.
At this point Dr. John Upptergrove called Lee and asked him to come to Easton Hospital where he was chief surgeon for 28 years.
Lee was not just a very good surgeon but he is a very nice person.
Januray 11, 2012. A visit to our club meeting by the officers and advisors of the K-Club at Palmer Elementary School. K-Kids is a "student led" community service club for elementary age students. It is the newest and fastest growing service organization for elementary students worldwide.
The Palmer K-Kids are 60 fourth graders, under the guidance of teacher advisors Mrs. Sarah Shive and Mrs. Erin Clark. The Kids meet monthly to work on projects that serve their neighborhood and their school and to make the world a better place to live. One of their favorite projects (if not their messiest) is making dog biscuits for a local animal shelter. In the picture to the right from left to right are: Mrs. Shive, Club President - Jordan Henning; Club Photographer - Riley MacDonald; Club Vice President - Quinn Langen and Mrs. Clark.
The officers are elected by their fellow members after giving campaign speeches! Palmer Kiwanis member Debbie Ashton-Chase is the Kiwanis liaison to this club and provided the narrative above.
With the super leadership by Mike Hahn, 35 families in the Easton area had a Merry Christmas through our annual food basket distribution. Nine members delivered 35 boxes of food including hams, peanut butter, cereals and other assorted canned goods to families with a total of 103 children who are truly in need. Mike gave a special thanks to John Gregor for the boxes; Chuck Lewis for working with the Key Club; Lynne Reismeier for the announcement cards; Ed Dean, Leroy Kresge, Pastor Pat, Jr. and the EAHS students for picking up all the canned goods. He also thanks EAHS Key Club advisor Jennifer Gray; Colleen and Jeff Miller and Lou and Mickey Muretta for most of the cereal and some of the peanut butter; Jim Caffrey for the use of the trailer and the many club members who donated canned foods, peanut butter and money to make this program a success again this year. We, the club members, THANK MIKE for all he has done in making this program such a success for the hundreds of families he has touch over many years.
November 16, 2011. A gift was presented by Kim Rose to Elaine Arnts for her two years of dedicated service as President. Thanks, Elaine, for your two years of being an enthusiastic president. You had some unique ideas and programs. We appreciate all that you have done for the club. Enjoy the free time...
